I'm a hyperlex (antonym of "dyslexic"). I took a speed reading course in college, and went into the class reading faster than anyone else in the class came out reading.
When I was in the first grade, I sounded out words. Second grade I'd read enough that, like TFS says, it was the shape of the word. But by fourth grade when I read a novel, I was there. I don't see the words "the water splashed as the frog jumped in", I see a frog jumping into the water.
