You're free to advertise through other means. Search isn't the only way to be seen. Sadly you'd be better off firing your highly paid SEO staff and paying Google directly for better search results. Sorry SEO is dead occupation, I guess?
Glad to see that the comment earned no favorable mods. I strongly suspect there are some google (and Amazon) sock puppets deployed to astroturf Slashdot. At least Apple's fanbois are sincere. Sex crazed, but sincere.
I recently read an anti-Google book that went into some depth about the google's advertising scams. Search & Destroy: Why You Can't Trust Google by Scott Cleland and Ira Brodsky. I was thinking about writing up a book review for Slashdot, but it doesn't seem worth the effort. First, the book was too polemical for my taste (which is saying quite a bit given how prone I am to polemics). Second, there were lots of annoying problems, such as an apparent lack of understanding of how Vickrey auctions work.
Third, and probably most importantly, it seems today's Slashdotters are little interested in book reviews. The displayed list remains headed by that review of Defense Against the Black Arts from 2011. The other two links are external (and misdirected), but also for ancient books. Just a systemic problem? These days books tend to be technically obsolete before the ink dries? [Today is lunch of the dinosaurs? A reader, a publisher, and an author walk into an Indian restaurant... (I'm going to use that joke.)]
Which reminds me to comment about the displayed list of "Funnies". Many, perhaps most, of those links are dead. At least the "Perl.com" links are still valid (though I can't remember why I'm still displaying that list). Time to visit ye olde settings, eh?
