So yes, ads are shown before the actual search results (as usual), but it's not like Google are trying to hide the results of the search. Basecamp is shown as the first search
I've refreshed the search page a few times with various results. Their site has come up on top 2 out of about 10 times. About 3 out of 10 times they are the number 2 or 3 link, and the rest of the time they are the number 4 link or lower. In all cases their profile is still displayed on the right. So in general if I heard about the company and did a google search I could find their homepage within the first page of results, not bad (I also found their former company name 37signals, awful looking page!)
Looking at their product and their competitors products it appears that part of the reason that others are coming up is that competitors are making comparisons to them. So google is finding those match because they contain the word you are looking for. Is it really google's fault or should Basecamp contact competitors and crack down on them using their company name?
Now looking at the product and screen shots I'm not so sure I would use their product over others. The one thing I am surprised is that more hiking or hunting search results didn't come up. In the end though, great free ad campaign, but after reviewing your product I'll pass (and I already know a few alternatives that look better).
