Pre google era was far from any dark age. There were several search engines and had to visit a couple to find what you were after. Not as immediate as google, but worked.

Oh well, I remember wading through 4 pages (ca. 200 results) of random ads on Altavista before finding my real results. Because SEO already was a thing your results seldom where the first hit.
"I am feeling lucky" was a very optimistic thing, when it first appeared. The real IP that google owns is how to get rid of spammers.
