Augmented reality started appearing in apps early in the history of Android and iOS, many for location based searching. They were fun to play with at first, but ultimately they are nothing more than a gimmick, with no real value added. I really don't care what a cartoon pair of shoes will look like on my feet when I can walk into a shop and try the real thing, and the animated shark in the living room underscores the real application of this gimmick.
